About This Workshop

The stinging nettle is one of Britain's most familiar wild plants — but there is far more to it than most people realise.

This SPECIAL workshop takes a deep dive into Urtica dioica, exploring its identification, seasonality, food uses, traditional applications, folklore and much more. We'll look beyond the idea of nettles simply being something to avoid and discover why they have been valued as a food, drink, medicine and useful plant for generations.

Expect plenty of hands-on learning, tasting and practical ideas that you can take home and use for yourself.

What You'll Do

  • Learn how to recognise stinging nettles and distinguish them from similar plants
  • Explore where and when nettles can be sustainably harvested
  • Learn how to handle and harvest nettles safely
  • Discover different ways of preparing and preserving nettles
  • Taste a selection of nettle-based foods and drinks
  • Explore traditional and historical uses of the plant
  • Discuss practical ways to incorporate nettles into your own foraging

What To Expect

This is a specialist workshop rather than a general introduction to foraging. We'll spend time getting to know one plant properly, combining identification, practical foraging knowledge, food, history and folklore.

There will be opportunities to handle, smell and taste nettle preparations, with plenty of discussion and questions along the way. As with all Forage Box workshops, the emphasis is on learning through experience rather than sitting through a formal lecture.

Who It's For

Perfect for anyone who has ever looked at a patch of nettles and wondered what they could actually do with it.

It's suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced foragers who want to deepen their knowledge of one of Britain's most useful wild plants.

Essential Information/On The Day

This is an outdoor foraging workshop, so please come prepared for changeable British weather and uneven ground.

You will be working with fresh nettles, so appropriate clothing and footwear are particularly important. Your guide will explain safe handling and harvesting techniques during the workshop.

Please tell us about any dietary requirements when booking.

Before the day

You don't need to study nettles beforehand or bring specialist foraging equipment.

Come prepared to spend time outdoors, get hands-on and try some genuinely wild ingredients. Please check your joining information before travelling, as the precise meeting point and any venue-specific information will be provided with your booking.
